Dan Rupp - Super Gas

I started racing on South Eubank in High school. Got a drag racing ticket and decided to take it to the track (Albuquerque Dragway) where it was legal. Started with a small block Chevy 350 in a 70 Chevelle. It ran mid 15's. A friend of mine took it down the track and said the SB had to go. So we built a big block Chevy 396 and haven't touched a small block since. I ran this car until 1982 when I joined the Air Force and had to sell the car before I left.

I returned to Albuquerque in 1987 and couldn't get back into racing right away. In 1991, we started racing a 1987 Hondo flatbottom drag boat. We raced in Texas in the SDBA (Southern Drag Boat Association) and Phoenix in the IHBA (International Hot Boat Association) until 1996 after winning IHBA Winternationals event in Phoenix.

Staging lanes at roswellIn 1996, we decided we wanted to get back on the asphalt. We sold the boat and bought a 1984 Camaro. We mostly ran brackets at Albuquerque, Roswell, and Hobbs. In 2001, after our track closed, we did a lot of rebuilding during the year and decided to go Denver for the Super Chevy Show in August 2001. The first pass we made was a 9.921 at 137.16 MPH. After we returned from Denver, we decided to take another 5 months off and update the car to get Super Gas Certified. We also got sponsorship through Pitre Buick Pontiac GMC, so we modified the car to a '90 Firebird. We got the chassis certification, and then went to Tucson for the Pro National Warm-ups in January 2002 and got my Super Gas License. Our second event was in Tucson at the NHRA Division 7 race the end of March 2002. we went four rounds of competition to the eighth finals. We felt good about the weekend since it was our first "real" Super Gas race.

I like the Super Gas class because of the heads up Pro start and first to the finish line within the index. It's more like the old style drag racing you did when you were a kid. To date the best ET with the Super Gas car is 9.58 at Tucson and best MPH is 144.294 at Roswell.

A special thanks to our sponsors - Pitre Buick Pontiac GMC, Carl Womack -Classic Auto Restoration, Dean Spears - Matco Tools. A very special thanks to the crew - Laura, Nicole, Brandon & Gary.

Special thanks to Ken Davis for towing us to Phoenix and Richard Peters for all his technical support.
